Unpaid Work Won't Fly

Did you know flight attendants in Canada work for an average of 35 hours for free every month?

Most airlines don’t pay flight attendants for vital safety-related duties like assisting passengers with additional needs, attending to medical and safety emergencies, boarding, deplaning, and ground delays.

Protect the Right to Strike!

On Monday, September 21 the federal government tabled Bill C-39, which includes changes to the Canada Labour Code. The proposed changes codify and expand the Jobs Minister’s authority to use Section 107 to end lawful strikes. It is a serious attack on our collective bargaining rights.

CUPE is fighting back. You may have seen some of our media coverage this week in the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, and the National Post. Our National Executive Board voted unanimously to defy the legislation if passed unamended.

The federal government is trying to fast-track Bill C-39. We can’t let that happen. We need all hands on deck. You and your local can:

  • Join our campaign and tell cabinet ministers to repeal Section 107 and vote no on Bill C-39.

  • Meet with your MP to urge them to protect the right to strike.

  • Share information about Bill C-39 and CUPE’s opposition on social media.

Enough is Enough.

WORKERS DESERVE A BETTER DEAL, AND IT’S TIME TO MAKE IT HAPPEN.

We juggle multiple jobs yet we’re still broke.

We work our entire lives and still can’t afford to retire.

We do all the right things to get ahead but groceries, housing, and other essentials fall further out of reach.

At every opportunity, big corporations hike the price of things we need, for profit.

And whenever there’s a bill to make life more affordable, Conservatives vote against it and push cuts to the programs and services we rely on instead.

WE’RE OVER IT.

Workers power Canada’s economy and we deserve respect. We need strong, pro-worker voices in government to hold the largest corporations accountable – and Workers Together will help make that happen.

It’s time to come together to build a better future for all workers.

Support CUPE

The national executive board of Canada’s largest union, CUPE, has passed a unanimous resolution vowing to defy the Liberal government’s Bill C-39 limiting the constitutional right to strike if it is passed unamended through Parliament.

The right to strike is a protected right under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms – a right affirmed by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2015. The jobs minister – under this government or any other – does not get to pick and choose whether that right is respected in this country.

“The Prime Minister has a mandate to defend Canada against Trump – not to run roughshod over our constitutional rights,” said CUPE National President Mark Hancock. “Gutting Canadians’ Charter rights will not make us stronger against Trump – it will make us weaker. The government should scrap this unconstitutional legislation, protect our rights and freedoms, and make corporations bargain fairly.”

Bill C-39 is an unprecedented attack on the ability of working people in Canada to negotiate their way to better wages and a better life – giving corporations even more power by taking away our right to free and fair collective bargaining.

“Governments cannot legislate labour peace,” said CUPE National Secretary-Treasurer Candace Rennick. “Legislating away our constitutional right to strike will not prevent us from using the full power of our union to defend our members. With the affordability crisis, workers need the protection of unions and their right to fight for a better life now more than ever.”
