How to Read Your Collective Agreement
The Collective Agreement, or CA, is broken down into various parts. Each part deals with a different aspect of our work. As you read the CA, you will find that sometimes words are "stricken" like this. These are parts of the CA that are no longer in effect and are usually clauses that were lost during concessions. They are kept as a reminder of what we have lost, and what we need to regain.
We realize that this document can be intimidating and sometimes hard to follow. We wanted to give you a brief explanation
of how the CA is arranged. If you have any questions, please contact us.
The Collective Agreement is made up of:
• Articles
• Letters of Understanding
• Blocking Rules
• Appendices
• Memos of Understanding
TIP
The best way to decide where to look in the CA, is to ask whether your question has to do with something related to either: going to-or being on, the aircraft, or if it has to do with something while you are at home. If it's something related to going (being) on an aircraft, then you will probably find the answer in the Blocking Rules. If it has to do with something that happens while you are at home, say leaves, then you are most likely to find the answer in the Articles section of the CA.
Articles
They contain information about how we and the Company conduct business that is not related to everyday flight operations.
They outline administrative procedures and duties, and what are the expectations of each party. Under the articles, you will
find information on topics such as Leaves, Grievance Procedures, Seniority, Medical Benefits, and most importantly, Pay.
Letters of Understanding
For the most part, they are the amendments to the Articles, usually the result of Arbitration decisions along with contract
negotiations. All the Letters of Understanding are listed by topic. They seek to clarify Articles that have required some
"examination" Whenever you look up a particular article; it is always a good idea to take a quick scan through the Letters
of Understanding, or LOU's, to see if the Article has been amended.
Blocking Rules
The most referenced part of the CA! They are referred to as the B's (B1, B2, B3 etc.) Blocking Rules outline the way in
which our blocks are built, how you bid for them, how they are awarded and what happens when something goes wrong while you
are working them! Creeping delays, and crew legalities.
Appendices
They are mostly charts, and serve to visualize some aspect of the Blocking Rules. You will find for example,
a map with drawn lines which outline what is considered a domestic/transborder vs. an overseas flight. Wonder why you get

Memos of Understanding
Like the LOU's, the MOU's are further explanatory notes on the spirit of a particular Article or Blocking Rule, as well as amendments from negotiations and arbitrations. They are also listed by topic and found in chronological order.
